What is a time zone?

A region that keeps one standard clock time. Offsets run from UTC −12:00 to UTC +14:00; most step in whole hours, but a few — India’s +05:30, Nepal’s +05:45 — don’t.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time, the reference every zone is measured against. It never changes for daylight saving. Your offset, --:--, is how far your clock is from it right now.

What is daylight saving time?

Some zones move their clocks forward an hour in spring and back in autumn to push daylight into the evening. Around 70 countries do; most of Asia and Africa don’t. On daylight time the zone code usually changes too — EST becomes EDT.
